A US Navy plane overshot the runway and crashed into the sea as it approached a base in Hawaii. The crew was unharmed in the incident on Monday and were able to free themselves from the plane.
The nine people were then rescued from the water, the New York Times reported. Photos and videos in local media showed the plane sticking out of the water. They were reminiscent of the plane that made a spectacular emergency landing on New York’s Hudson River in 2009 without anyone being injured.
According to a CNN report, this time it was a P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft. The machine can carry both torpedoes and cruise missiles and is used, among other things, in reconnaissance missions.
Rain and clouds
The cause of the accident was initially unclear. The US Navy plane crashed on the island of Oahu, which is also the capital of the US state of Hawaii. Local media reported difficult weather conditions on Monday with rain and cloud.
To prevent the spread of hazardous substances, barriers have been placed in the water. The US Navy base is located in Kaneohe Bay, which is also home to coral reefs, a hammerhead shark breeding ground and a University of Hawaii Marine Biology Research Institute.
