Gas leak threatens – large fire broke out in slaughterhouse in Bergheim

Date:

Since 2 a.m. on Sunday, the Flachgau fire brigade and the professional fire brigade of the city of Salzburg have been fighting a fire in the former slaughterhouse in Bergheim. Toxic ammonia gas, which is used for cooling, threatened to escape.

About 100 Floriani have been fighting the fire since the early hours. Emergency services were alerted around 2 a.m. The fire in the former Salzburg abattoir, now owned by the company Alpenrind, spread far beyond the municipal boundaries of Bergheim (Flachgau).

Fire under control
The fire was under control around 6 a.m. The dangerous ammonia gas used in the refrigeration was in danger of leaking. The fire brigade, including the professional fire brigade of the city of Salzburg, has carefully opened the roof to prevent further damage to the cooling systems.

Residents informed via loudspeaker
Neighbors were informed by loudspeakers by emergency services to close their windows to protect themselves from a gas leak. The work to extinguish the fire will last until Sunday afternoon.
