Sad certainty – Missing woman (27) found dead after sudden flood

Date:

Now the sad certainty: The 27-year-old woman who was surprised by a flash flood on Saturday as part of a canyoning group in Germany’s Allgäu and then went missing is dead. Her body was found Sunday morning by rescuers in the Starzlachklamm, located in the border triangle of Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Bavaria.

As the first investigations by the Bavarian police showed, there were several organizers with guided canyoning tours in the Starzlach gorge on Saturday. After the heavy rainfall, some of these groups were apparently cut off from further progress by the rapidly rising bodies of water within just 10 to 15 minutes. At least eight people were trapped and three canyoning athletes were swept away.

The 27-year-old woman was subsequently reported missing. A 49-year-old man was seriously injured and a 31-year-old man suffered minor injuries. After the alarm was raised, emergency services launched extensive rescue and search efforts, rescuing several people from the canyon. Among them were the two wounded men.

At the same time, they began the search for the missing woman. These had to be demolished in vain when it got dark and because the water level was still high. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the emergency services resumed the search and found the woman lifeless in the gorge moments later. A summoned emergency doctor could only determine death. The 49-year-old is in hospital, the 31-year-old with minor injuries should be able to leave the hospital later in the day, police said.

The Alpine Task Force of the Swabian South/West Police Headquarters has started the investigation. One of the duties will be to investigate any existing responsibilities of the organizers.
