A Tyrolean alpinist was very lucky on Sunday afternoon when he fell five meters into a crevice on his way to the Reichenspitze (3303 m) in the Zillertal Alps. He suffered “only” an arm injury in the accident and was flown to the hospital in Schwaz.
“We were warned just before 12 noon,” said Andreas Eder, local manager of the Mayrhofen mountain rescue service. A Zillertal mountaineering duo wanted to climb from the Plauener Hütte over the Zillergrund to the Reichenspitze on the border with Salzburg. “One of the two then slipped over the rim opening because a piece of ice must have broken on its stand,” says Eder.
Companion raised the alarm
As a result, the alpinist, who was not tied up, fell a few meters above the glacier and then three meters deep into the crevasse. The man was left lying there with a serious arm wound. His companion, who was in the immediate vicinity, immediately raised the alarm.
Two helicopters took off at an altitude of about 3000 meters from the accident site. In addition to the Heli 4 emergency doctor helicopter, the Libelle Tirol also flew with six Mayrhofen mountain rescuers towards the Reichenspitze.
Wounded rescued on rope from edge crack
“Fortunately, the hole was quite wide, so Heli 4 was able to rescue the injured person on the rope,” says mountain rescuer Eder. The Zillertal was then flown to the hospital in Schwaz. The crew of the Libelle Tirol then also rescued the second alpinist on the rope, which was in the immediate vicinity of the rim opening. The uninjured person was then flown out of the immediate danger zone by helicopter.
glaciers broken
Keyword “danger area”: The Tyrolean glaciers in this summer are basically very rough and therefore particularly dangerous. Mountain rescuer Andreas Eder therefore strongly advises alpinists to tug of war.
Incidentally, the two alpinists were not the only ones who climbed the Kuchelmooskees without ropes. “Another alpinist was alone in the area,” Eder shook his head in disbelief.
