The fisherman was long thought to be missing, but after the sinking of his ship, the 44-year-old was rescued.
Romualdo Rodrigues has had a true horror trip. The 44-year-old left Oiapoque in northern Brazil in late July in his seven-meter wooden boat. He sailed to Îlet la Mère, an island off the coast of French Guiana, to fish. But on the way there, his boat suddenly sank.
Floated by sea for over a week in the freezer
By a happy coincidence, the Brazilian had a freezer on board. So he decided to climb in without further ado. Little did he know then that the empty coffin would save his life.
For over a week, Rodrigues floated in the sea, living in fear of being eaten by sharks. He grew weaker by the day, had nothing to eat and nothing to drink. Only after eleven days – he drifted about 450 kilometers – he was finally discovered and rescued by another fishing boat.
His horror trip wasn’t over, though: because he couldn’t identify himself when he was rescued, he was jailed for another 16 days. Only when his identity was clarified was he allowed to return home.
