Salvini sparks scandal by questioning sanctions against Russia

Date:

“We are facing the only case in the world where the sanctions to stop a war are not harmful to those who are sanctioned, but to those who impose sanctions,” the leader of Italy’s far-right League party denounced.

Matteo Salvini sparked another political storm in Italy on Saturday by questioning the effectiveness of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. The leader of the far-right League party defended that the country’s citizens “lose and the Russians win” and that “obviously someone in Brussels made a mistake with the bills”.

“We are facing the only case in the world where sanctions to stop a war, bring a regime to its knees, block attacks, do not harm those who are sanctioned, but those who impose sanctions,” he added. ready. “We must continue to support, defend and help the Ukrainian people, but the sanctions will not harm Russia, which earns hundreds of billions more. They harm our businesses and our families,” he said.

Salvini was more conciliatory yesterday. “Europe says sanctions will not be lifted? Okay. One alone is not going anywhere. I don’t bark at the moon. Let’s leave them behind,” he said. In addition, he called for a “European shield”, although he repeated his argument: “Sanctions don’t work. Whoever invades a country is completely wrong. We have always supported all aid to Ukraine, but several months have already passed and the gas bills are even paid three times. The war continues and the Russian treasury is filled with money,” he stressed.

Salvini’s words immediately provoked a reaction from other political sectors. “You should not joke about the issue of war and sanctions. It is irresponsible to campaign in this way and doubts the reliability of the country,” Democratic Party leader Enrico Letta warned, while the minister of Southern and Territorial Cohesion, Mara Carfagna, of the conservative party Fuerza Italia stated that “when I hear Salvini speak about sanctions, I seem to hear Putin’s propaganda and I am genuinely concerned that our country will wink at Putin.”

At the same time, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, announced in a statement that he will report to the UN Security Council on Tuesday on the results of inspections carried out in recent days at the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya, in Ukraine. “I remain deeply concerned about the situation at the factory. This has not changed, but the continued presence of the IAEA will be paramount to help stabilize the situation,” he explained.

Grossi is expected to release a report next week with conclusions on the security situation at the nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe. The IAEA’s announcement this Sunday came after the plant “again” lost connection to the main grid, although the facilities continued to operate thanks to a backup line. On Saturday, Moscow also reported a nighttime attack attempt by Kiev troops on the factory that had been repulsed, killing at least 47 members of the Ukrainian amphibious assault group.
