A 21-year-old is said to have raced on the Vienna Ring at excessive speeds of up to 160 km/h on Sunday. When he turned from the Löwelstrae to the Ringstrae in the inner city, he is said to have ignored all police stop signs and red traffic lights, endangering several road users.
According to police, the driver crashed his mini-convertible into a streetlight pole near the Uraniastraße – Vordere Zollamtstrae intersection and fled on foot. As the speeder tried to run away, he left his 24-year-old injured passenger in the accident car.

Officers from the standby unit stopped the 21-year-old near the scene of the accident around 1:30 a.m. and found a small amount of white substance while searching, police said. Both injured, the driver and passenger, received emergency medical assistance from the Vienna professional rescue service and were taken to hospital.
Because it is suspected that the 21-year-old acted intentionally, he was temporarily arrested and taken to a prison. The investigation is ongoing.
