National operation – 30 suspected mafiosi arrested in Italy

Date:

Italian police arrested more than 30 suspected mafiosi in a nationwide operation. The police accuse the suspects of money laundering, usury and receiving stolen goods. Investigators also seized goods worth a total of about 6.5 million euros and ordered searches in 12 provinces from northern to southern Italy and on the island of Sardinia.

During the investigation into extortion in the Bergamo region, a lead led to the Calabria-based mafia ‘Ndrangheta, as authorities in Bergamo, northern Italy, have announced.

Several entrepreneurs were therefore suspected of laundering money from the clan’s criminal activities through their companies. There are also some accountants involved who work out ways of tax evasion. An employee of the Tax and Customs Administration has been investigated for corruption.

In Italy, police repeatedly arrest suspected mafia members in large-scale operations. Last Thursday, the financial police reported the arrest of 202 suspected mafiosi and helpers of the ‘Ndrangheta. Among those arrested were politicians and high-ranking local authorities.
