Terror hits Russian embassy in Kabul

Date:

At least eight people have been killed in a suicide bombing, including two embassy employees

Security in Afghanistan, that feat the Taliban flaunt every time they are asked about their first year in power, disappears every time an explosion shakes the country, especially if it’s in Kabul. The capital, whose protection is in the hands of the men of the Haqqani network, experienced another day of violence after a suicide attack at the gates of the Russian embassy. At least eight people were killed, including two officials of the Russian legation, as confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow. A major blow to the Taliban’s aspirations to gain international recognition and the reopening of foreign missions in Kabul.

The attack took place in mid-morning, as dozens of people lined up at the gates of the legation to apply for visas, one of the obsessions of thousands upon thousands of Afghans looking to leave the country. Although Russia does not officially recognize the emirate, its embassy works like those of Iran, Turkey, China or Qatar. “The suicide bomber was recognized before he reached the target and the embassy guards opened fire,” said Mullah Sabir, head of the precinct where the attack took place. However, he had time to activate the charge clinging to his body.

This is the second suicide attack in the past week. At least 18 people were killed on Friday in an attack in Herat, in the west of the country, targeting a key religious affiliated to the Taliban. The attack took place at the Guzargah Mosque, located on the outskirts of the city, just as the temple’s imam, Mujib Rahman Ansari, arrived. Suicide bombings of this kind are claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State (IS), a major internal rival of the Taliban. The aim is to expose security loopholes in the emirate.
