As Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin loses more and more military forces, he is increasingly dependent on alternatives. US military experts reported ill-prepared volunteers in irregular makeshift units.
That wrote the analysts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) on Sunday evening (local time). They see reason for the deployment of ill-prepared volunteers in Putin’s strained relationship with his own military leadership and the Defense Ministry over the summer, especially after recent territorial losses. During their counter-offensive in the northeast of Ukraine in early September, Ukrainian forces in the Kharkov region advanced as far as the Oskil River.
No general mobilization so far
So far there has been no general mobilization for war in Russia. The army and President Putin are therefore dependent on volunteers. According to the ISW report, more and more prisoners are currently being recruited and undercover men are being mobilized from the partially occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk. The army also uses elements of the Russian security services.
According to the ISW, the makeshift units suffer from the disadvantage of leading to further tensions, inequality and a lack of cohesion. Because they undergo only a short training before being deployed, they are said to have “little effective combat power”.
