On Vienna’s Danube Island, dogs and pedal riders often collide. A simple solution would be a driving ban on certain routes, but the city is opposed.
There are a total of 42 kilometers of beach and nature reserves available on the Danube Island, a popular destination for peace seekers, cyclists and dog owners. But although the island has a lot to offer for cyclists, the choice of off-leash areas for dogs is limited: only two special dog zones have been designated here. The situation is considered particularly critical in a section right on the banks of the New Danube between the Stadlauer Ostbahn Bridge and the Prater Bridge, where stray cyclists and stray dogs often get in each other’s way.
