Conservative Ulf Kristersson is allowed to try to form a government after the tight parliamentary elections in Sweden. Parliament Speaker Andreas Norlen gave the party leader a moderate on Monday an exploratory mandate to explore options for forming a new government. Norlen announced this after talks with the heads of the Swedish Reichstag parties in Stockholm.
As a moderate leader, Kristersson relies on a narrow majority of a four-party bloc. For the first time after a Swedish election, this camp also includes the anti-immigrant Swedish Democrats. They had achieved a record 20.5% result in the Reichstag elections about a week ago, for the first time replacing the moderates as the second strongest party in the country after the Social Democrats.
Whether the four parties can agree on a government base, however, is as open as the future role of right-wing populists in such a constellation.
