Spain, only third in the European medal table

Date:

Since the disappointment of losing gold at home in 2007, the best team of the 21st century has won the last four finals it has played in the continental championship

Until Sunday, Spain was level with Lithuania in the number of continental titles, but with the capture of the fourth crown, the team led by Sergio Scariolo is now only third in the Eurobasket medal list.

The list of winners is led by the former Soviet Union (14 titles), for the also-defunct Yugoslavia (eight gold), with the heir Serbia so far with only two silver medals. Croatia won two bronzes and Slovenia a gold, captured by the team led by Doncic in the previous edition.

However, Spain has four gold medals and 14 medals in the continental championship as the best team of the 21st century. To the titles won between 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2022 we have to add six silver and four bronze. Spain has won four medals in the past six editions. In 2013 and 2017, the team also reached the podium, with two bronze medals.

The first European final that Spain lost was right in the first edition, in 1935 (against Latvia), and the last, cruelly, in the Eurobasket they played at home, in Madrid in 2007. Then, in what is now called WiZink Center , Pau Gasol missed the basket that would have earned the team its first continental gold and it was Russia who were declared champions.

Since that disappointment, Spain has not lost any of the four finals reached at the European Championship. In 2009, he won gold against Serbia, in 2011 against France, in 2015 against Lithuania and again in 2022 against the French team.
