A 49-year-old man has been convicted by the Vienna court of animal cruelty after kicking a Maltese dog on a leash at the entrance of Palais Kinsky on March 30, 2022. The dog died on the way to an animal hospital. With a sentence of up to two years, the suspect was given nine months, of which he was given a probationary period of three years.
The suspect had told the judge that he felt “to some extent guilty”. Apparently out of annoyance that security personnel had thrown him out of an opening due to his alcoholism and behavioral problems, he had attacked the dog.
Stepped on a dog several times
The owner of the small dog – a 73-year-old retiree – was also present at the opening. Not wanting to carry the little four-legged friend up the stairs to the property, she tied him to the lower landing. The suspect took him there. He kicked the Maltese dog several times with steel-toed work boots.
The man accepted his sentence. However, as he was not represented by a lawyer, the verdict is not formally final. The 49-year-old would have three days to appeal.
