On Saturday, a flash flood caused by heavy rain surprised several canyoning athletes in the Starzlach gorge in the Bavarian Allgäu. A 27-year-old woman was killed and two others were injured, some seriously. The German prosecutor’s office has now launched an investigation into culpable homicide against two guides who were traveling with the group.
As police announced, the initial investigation results revealed that two leaders (“guides”) are accused of negligently killing the woman. The guides, a 32-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man, cared for the group to which the 27-year-old deceased belonged. Another negligence bodily injury investigation was launched by prosecutors against two other guides, aged 38 and 60, who led another group, including a 31-year-old who was injured in the accident.
One of the central questions of the investigation will be, according to police, why the groups were in the Starzlach Gorge despite the weather and rapidly rising water levels.
So far, police reported that a 49-year-old man was seriously injured and a 31-year-old man slightly injured. It is a confusion, it is true that the 49-year-old man was slightly injured and was able to leave the hospital during the day yesterday. The 31-year-old man, on the other hand, was seriously injured and is still in hospital, but his life is not in danger.
The further investigation by the police led by the Kempten prosecutor’s office is extensive. Among other things, a large number of witnesses are still to be heard, so that new findings are not expected in the coming days.
