It is terrible how painfully two German Shepherds had to die in Upper Austria: The owner of the animals parked her vehicle and trailer on a club premises – and left the pedigree dogs in the box in the sweltering heat! Young people from all over Austria who attended a youth camp there witnessed the drama.
The incredible incident took place last Monday: Members of the Austrian German Shepherd Dog Association (ÖVS) were preparing their place in a community of 1,500 residents next to the A1 in the Vöcklabruck district for a youth camp. “The locals helped prepare the event. “Young people come from all over Austria,” says club president Richard Hüppe.
Locked in a dog transport cart
An acquaintance of the local group leader took her two dogs to the location – albeit in a special trailer that can transport dogs. Officials from the Vöcklabruck district administration are now investigating the fact that it happened in the vicinity of the club that the dogs were not allowed out of the box.

The consequences were fatal in any case. When the outside temperature on July 15 was 30 degrees, the two dogs had no chance of survival in their mobile prison. They died in pain – and apparently completely unnoticed – in the trailer. The club management is shocked by the incident and has assured the authorities of full cooperation.
“We as a club and the very committed leader of this local group in the Vöcklabruck district come here to kiss hands completely innocently. This is all terrible, the dog owner will have to answer for himself,” says club chairman Richard Hüppe in an interview with the “Krone”.

The club board took immediate action and informed the members: An e-mail message spoke of a tragic incident involving dogs. “The circumstances of this incident are currently the subject of an ongoing investigation and all those responsible are working hard to fully clarify the matter,” writes Claudia Strasser, who is a member of the association’s board.
A planned show for young dog handlers and the youth championship were cancelled in any case. The veterinarian of the district administration of Vöcklabruck, who was recently involved in the case of the half-starved cattle in Attergau, has already started his investigation.
An anonymous caller discovered the explosive case
The case was discovered via an anonymous call to the veterinary service of the Vöcklabruck district administration, confirms deputy Astrid Schmid. When questioned by the authorities last Thursday, three days after the painful death of the dogs, the owner involved also admitted that two dogs were dead. The carcasses have since been removed and therefore no further investigation is possible.
It is unclear whether the dog owner is also under investigation for animal abuse. The state police headquarters is not aware of any investigation in this direction.
