Two lesbian activists have been sentenced to death in Iran. The 24- and 31-year-old women have been found guilty of “corruption on Earth”, according to Iranian justice. This is the most serious charge in the Islamic Republic’s legal system and is usually brought against Sharia law violations.
The two women are currently being held in a women’s prison. According to activists, they are accused of ‘promoting’ homosexuality.
Homosexuality is banned in Iran. Iran’s penal code expressly criminalizes same-sex sexual activity for both men and women.
Organization: first case of this kind in the Islamic country
“It is the first time that a woman has been sentenced to death in Iran for her sexual orientation,” Shadi Amin of the LGBTQ organization 6Rang told AFP. The English abbreviation LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer.
