After the strong migration movements during the Easter weekend, the government in Rome took special measures. That is why the government decided to declare a state of emergency across the country that will last for six months, Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said. And he calls on the EU to act.
In a first phase, the financing of five million euros should be made easy, it said. “We are aware of the seriousness of the migration phenomenon, which has increased by 300 percent this year. It must be clear that the state of emergency does not solve the problem, which requires conscious and responsible action by the European Union,” said the minister.
“Absolute State of Emergency”
The state of emergency is intended, among other things, to simplify procedures for setting up new reception centers for refugees. “We are experiencing an absolute state of emergency that is straining state structures. The southern Italian regions cannot cope with this emergency alone,” said Minister Musumeci.
“It is crucial that Europe finally takes action: it has talked for years without lifting a finger and it is time to prove that the EU is really a union and that solidarity with migrants is not just Italy’s job, Spain, Greece or Malta.”, Infrastructure Minister and Lega boss Matteo Salvini stressed.
Landed in Lampedusa at Easter in 2000
Over the Easter weekend, more than 40 boats carrying about 2,000 people arrived in Lampedusa from Friday to Monday after sea voyages across the Mediterranean, the Italian coastguard reported Monday evening. 38 people died in shipwrecks off the coast of Tunisia and in Maltese waters, with 18 others still missing.
The refugee camp on Lampedusa is hopelessly overcrowded. About 1800 people can stay here, four times more than the maximum capacity allows.
