On Tuesday morning, several “LobauBleibt” protesters occupied ÖBB train tracks in the area of the Erzherzog-Karl-Strasse S-Bahn station in Vienna-Donaustadt. After the last occupied Lobau camp was evacuated on Monday evening, the activists announced that they would continue the protest.
According to police, about 15 of the activists illegally climbed the track around 4:30 am to protest against the planned city road and Lobau tunnel, as before, without success. After all, tracks will be demolished here in the near future for the construction of the city street.
Police action still ongoing
However, since 7.30 am, the tracks have been cleared by the police. They apparently didn’t care that the activists were putting their lives in danger. Because, according to the ÖBB, entering the circuit is life-threatening and strictly prohibited. In principle, the entire track area is considered a danger zone.
On Monday evening, after about a year and a final ultimatum from the city of Vienna, the ex-occupiers were finally forced to leave the previously occupied park in the Anfanggasse in Donaustadt. So the squatters became camp nomads – reported the “Krone”.
The good news for all commuters and students: Regular rail operations will not be affected as construction work is currently underway in the area anyway, the ÖBB said.
