“Function Fulfilled” – Farewell Speech: Johnson Compared Himself to a Rocket

Date:

Outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson compared himself in a closing speech on Tuesday to a rocket that does the job. He dismissed speculation about a possible comeback. Johnson was in office for about three years.

“Let me say that I am now like one of those launch vehicles that has done its job and gently enters the atmosphere and sinks invisibly somewhere in a distant part of the Pacific,” Boris Johnson said Tuesday. The 58-year-old gave his farewell address as British Prime Minister on London’s Downing Street, attended by hundreds of workers, MPs and media representatives.

In doing so, he not only said goodbye to the head of government, but also looked back on his three-year term in office. The 58-year-old mentioned achievements such as Brexit, the rapid spread of corona vaccines, arms deliveries to Ukraine, fighting crime and the construction of new hospitals.

Audience at Queen
After his speech, Johnson and his wife Carrie drove to Scotland in a car. He was expected there around noon for an audience with Queen Elizabeth II, where he will ask for his release. The Queen traditionally resides at her Scottish estate, Balmoral Castle, from mid-July to mid-September. The fact that she is currently not receiving politicians at Buckingham Palace in London has to do with the monarch’s mobility problems.

Immediately after meeting Johnson, the 96-year-old queen must instruct his successor, Liz Truss, to form a government. As reported, Truss was named party leader on Monday after a week-long selection process. The previous foreign minister had previously prevailed over ex-treasury minister Rishi Sunak of some 170,000 Tory members. She plans to address the nation with a Downing Street speech on Tuesday afternoon (around 5pm CEST).
