There are funny stories you can’t make up. All the better that these often happen in areas threatened by war and hardship – and at the very least provide some distraction in such a difficult everyday life. For example, in the war-torn Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, a chimpanzee in a raincoat on a bicycle that had escaped from the local zoo surprised passersby — and made them smile.
Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine after Kiev with about 1.5 million inhabitants. War is never far away. On Monday, 16 houses were destroyed in a Russian attack on the village of Besruky near the city. In the Nowobavarskyj district, single-family homes and a ten-storey high-rise are said to have been damaged and several people injured.
Many people are on the run. Those who continue to strive for a touch of normalcy – and also take care of those who cannot easily leave the country. Including the animals of the local zoo. Yet they seem to occasionally feel like going on an “excursion” … because many a walker suddenly saw a chimpanzee wandering through the city!
Although, the primate doesn’t seem to be wandering. Instead, he appears to be exploring his surroundings and “wanting to stretch his legs” before a zoo worker cautiously approaches the animal.
Animal exchanges coat for hug
The great ape also likes to be approached, but probably only for selfish reasons. It’s raining and the chimpanzee doesn’t seem to like it at all. Finally, he seems to be emphatically demanding his nurse’s regulation coat – which she gladly hands him over.
After some difficulties, the yellow jacket is finally seated, which is acknowledged with a warm hug. Finally it’s back to the zoo in appropriate style by bike – the animal in the “driver’s seat” of course… What a cordial pick-up service in such dark times!
