53 percent of Austrians have already contracted the corona virus, seven percent of whom several times. These are the results of the health survey 2022 commissioned by Wiener Städtische. The population’s further willingness to vaccinate was also questioned: eight out of ten people who want to be vaccinated can imagine an annual booster.
“The pandemic is not over yet and – in addition to stress and other everyday stresses – still has a very clear impact on the physical and mental well-being of Austrians and on their health behaviour,” said Doris Wendler, CEO of Wiener Städtische. About four in ten people who have officially recovered said they suffered from long-term Covid symptoms such as exhaustion. Overall, one in three of 1,000 respondents between the ages of 16 and 70 reported that their own physical health had deteriorated in the past year.

According to their own statements, more than half of those surveyed had already contracted Covid-19, seven percent of them multiple times. The majority have already been vaccinated three times against the corona virus. In this group, 60 percent were prepared to be vaccinated again in the autumn. Among them are mainly the over-50s and the highly educated. For eight out of ten people who want to be vaccinated, an annual booster vaccination is also conceivable.
Poorer mental health
Another point that the Wiener Städtische has asked is mental health. Here, every third person stated that their mental state had deteriorated in the past 12 months. Reasons are, for example, stress in daily life, but also the pandemic and the general circumstances. A marked degree of mental distress was especially noticeable in children, especially in their teens. “Especially in the age group of 15 to 18 years, body and psyche go on a varied journey. There are also other burdens, such as the pandemic last year,” said the CEO in a broadcast.
In general, according to their self-assessment, the health of the Austrians is at a fairly good level. In the online survey, 61 percent rated their physical condition as (very) good and 62 percent rated their mental condition as good. The Gallup Institute conducted the study.
