Slaughterhouse fire – Security (27) as fire devil: riddles about the motive

Date:

A guard (27) set the slaughterhouse on fire, which he admitted after being detained during police interrogation. The public prosecutor wants to apply for guardianship. Meanwhile, the police want to clarify the motive.

The “Krone” reported on the arrest after the great fire at the Salzburg slaughterhouse. The suspect, a security guard (27), made a partial confession during the police interrogation. According to information from “Krone”, the suspected arsonist admitted to setting “something” on fire. They are probably cardboard boxes stored there – that is, highly flammable material that is actually used to package the meat products. But he couldn’t or wouldn’t reveal the “why”.

The police want to clarify the motive and the course of the crime
For the public prosecutor, the suspicion of arson is substantiated by the statements of the suspect: “Pre-trial detention has been requested”, it sounds when asked. Incidentally, according to research by “Krone”, the man was not directly employed by the slaughterhouse, but by a security service provider. Therefore, the 27-year-old has not yet been prosecuted.

Despite the partial confession, the police still have investigative work to do, Hans Wolfgruber explains: “What was the motive and what was the concrete course of the crime? We now want to clarify these questions through further research.”

The devastating fire broke out around 1.40 am on Sunday night in a warehouse of the largest meat producer in Western Austria. 120 firefighters fought the fire for more than 12 hours. Meanwhile, there were fears that toxic ammonia had escaped from the cooling system on the roof – but this could be prevented. The clean-up work that had to be done after the “fire was out” also proved difficult due to the danger of collapse.

Fire investigator Walter Kittl was able to rule out a technical defect on Tuesday morning – since then the authorities have assumed arson. The extent of the damage for the 130-strong company is still unclear.
