The perpetrators shot indiscriminately at civilians and police in a market and a girl was among the dead
At least five people were killed yesterday when several persons on motorcycles opened fire with automatic weapons on civilians and security forces at a market in the city of Izeh, located in the southwestern Iranian province of Khuzestan, authorities said. Among the deceased is a minor. Another 15 people were injured in the attack.
According to information from the Iranian agency Isna, the attackers allegedly arrived at the event site aboard two motorcycles, from which they opened fire on the crowd gathered in the market with assault weapons. Anti-government demonstrations were also organized.
The fatalities are three men, a woman and a girl between the ages of 9 and 5. Among the injured, including police officers, eight are in critical condition and have been taken to hospitals in the area, the province’s deputy governor in charge of security, Valiolá Hayati, told public television. At the end of this edition, no official statement had been released about the shooting, the causes of which were unknown.
Iran’s already fragile social stability has been further disrupted in recent weeks following the death in police custody of young Mahsa Amini, arrested for not wearing the veil correctly. This episode has led to numerous demonstrations that have been brutally suppressed by the authorities of the theocratic regime.
