Protests against a controversial reform of the justice system continue in Slovakia. On the contrary, they are getting bigger and bigger. On Thursday evening, tens of thousands of people again took to the streets in various cities against the government of left-wing nationalist Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has been in power since the end of October.
As organizers told TV news channel TA3, around 30,000 people were said to have gathered in the capital Bratislava alone. Several thousand people also followed the call of three opposition parties in thirty other cities in the country.
“Fico, go to Russia!”
This day of demonstrations is likely to have been the largest yet in a wave of opposition protests that began in December. The demonstrators carried banners with slogans such as ‘Fico is bad for Slovakia’, ‘Fico, go to Russia!’ and “Shame on the Fico Mafia government!” According to the TASR news agency, smaller solidarity gatherings also took place in Brussels, Prague, Paris and other European cities.
The European Commission is also concerned
The government plan has also led to critical statements from the European Commission and the EU Parliament. One of the most controversial aspects of the reform is the tripartite coalition’s plan to abolish a special prosecutor’s office responsible for organized crime and political crimes, saying this would be “political abuse”.
