Over the past 100 years, the Marmolada Glacier has lost more than 90 percent of its volume and 70 percent of its surface area. This is the conclusion of a study by the Italian environmental protection organization Legambiente, carried out in collaboration with Italian glaciologists. Accordingly, the glacier is in danger of disappearing completely within 15 years.
“We need more awareness of what is happening and, above all, a new relationship between humans and nature. We should no longer see the mountains as an amusement park, but as an exceptional space where we can experiment with sustainability,” says Vanda Bonardo, Legambiente’s alpine expert.
The environmental association, together with Italian glaciologists, will investigate the position of the glaciers in the Alpine arc until September 3. Their condition is observed in five stages from the Valle d’Aosta to Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Legambiente’s latest report also found that glaciers in the Alps are shrinking due to global warming. More than 200 of these glaciers have disappeared since the late 1800s.
