Thursday evening there was a deadly police operation in the Hungarian capital. Officers rushed to an apartment building in Budapest where a resident armed with a knife broke down his neighbor’s door and threatened him. When he tried to arrest the rioter, he attacked the police officers.
According to a police headquarters report, three officers were injured – one of them so badly that he succumbed to his injuries moments later in hospital. Other police officers shot the fleeing perpetrator in the leg and arrested him. It is not yet known why the man wanted to attack his neighbor.
Eyewitnesses told Hungarian media that a large police force of up to 30 vehicles had been deployed. One person also filmed the fugitive’s arrest using a cell phone camera. It shows two police officers with drawn service weapons trying to keep the perpetrator in check.
But he tries to escape again. Then one of the uniformed men fires a shot. The knife man is hit in the leg and falls to the ground. Both the knifeman and the two injured police officers are in hospital.
Big grief from the police
The country’s police are mourning the 29-year-old colleague, who would have turned 30 in February. Black flags were hoisted at police stations in Hungary on Friday in memory of Peter B. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has reported on both radio and Facebook about the 29-year-old’s death and expressed his deepest condolences to friends and family. “We must appreciate our police officers!” wrote the head of government on his Facebook page (see above).
