A tornado crossed Lake Garda, Italy’s largest inland waterway on Thursday. Fortunately, the hurricane, which formed in the course of a powerful thunderstorm, did not hit the shore, but discharged its energy onto the water’s surface. However, it is still unclear whether there were boats on the lake at the time.
There were no reports of injuries or damage to ships or boats on the lake, which the coast guard says is popular with tourists. Numerous people who witnessed the natural spectacle captured the tornado on film and posted their footage on social media. Here you can see how the hurricane builds up above the lake and dissolves again after a few minutes.
Area affected by rain and hail
Northern Italy was hit by severe storms on Thursday morning. For example, heavy rain with hail fell on the Veronese shore of Lake Garda. No special damage was reported. However, there were traffic delays as all vehicles had to stop due to poor visibility.
Earlier in the night, torrential rain had hit the Como area, causing landslides and flooding, as well as Torno and Blevio in Como, which had been hit by storms in July and a year ago.
