Sudden storm – holidaymakers killed by lightning in Mallorca

Two holidaymakers from Germany and Switzerland were struck by lightning in Mallorca on Thursday. The two men were on a beach in the northeast of the island when the storm suddenly struck. Earlier, the Spanish weather service Aemet had predicted a few raindrops at most.

The two men, who did not know each other, were on a beach in Cala Mesquida on Thursday. This is a popular swimming bay on the Spanish island. When it started to rain there, one of the holidaymakers wanted to close his parasol. He was struck by lightning and died instantly. According to police, the other man, about 15 meters away, was hit shortly afterwards and was initially alive. Despite their efforts, rescuers were unable to save the tourist’s life.

The wife of a holidaymaker had to watch the accident and received psychological care. According to the police, the German was 51 years old and the Swiss 65. She did not provide any further information.

The storm front came up quite suddenly. The Spanish weather service Aemet had initially forecast sunshine and at most a few raindrops. In the northeast of Mallorca, warnings were issued for thunderstorms and heavy rain in the early afternoon. More storms could be coming in the coming days. Temperatures of up to 37 degrees are expected again next week.
