Animal use in a school home in Rosental. A snake not found in Carinthia had sneaked into the system.
The animal was in a basement shaft of the dormitory in St. Jakob im Rosental on Tuesday when students discovered it and immediately alerted the fire brigade. “It was a fairly large snake, so we initially assumed it could be an Aesculapian snake,” said emergency services, who then notified experts at Happ reptile zoo in Klagenfurt.
Climate change exposure or notice
When the zookeeper arrived, she immediately recognized that the snake was a four-lined snake, originally from southeastern Europe. “How this animal ended up with us is unclear. Either someone has exposed it or it is an indication of climate change and the resulting dispersal of the reptiles,” explains zoo director Helga Happ.
By the way, four-lined snakes are not poisonous. “On the contrary, they mainly eat mice, which is why they are actually very useful,” said the reptile experts, who captured the snake and took it to Klagenfurt, where the animal is now well housed.
