Even Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, one of Putin’s most loyal vassals, is stunned by the rapid collapse of the Russian army around Kharkiv in Ukraine: the Russian leadership has “made mistakes” and now needs explanations, Kadyrov said.
For the first time, a high-ranking ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized the course of the war: he does not understand “what the Russian Defense Ministry is currently doing and why it is doing it,” said Ramzan Kadyrov, the feared leader of the Chechens and an unconditional supporter of Putin, in a message to his 2.4 million followers on Telegram. Russia has returned thousands of square kilometers of occupied territory to Ukraine in recent days.
Increasing criticism from former Putin loyalists
According to Kadyrov, Russia has “made mistakes” and has not answered many important questions about the campaign against Ukraine. Criticizing Russia’s armed forces, the Chechen ruler joins a long line of right-wing nationalist bloggers in Russia who are slowly losing their patience with Moscow amid Ukraine’s many setbacks.
Moscow must declare itself
Kadyrov himself made a significant contribution to the events of the war. From the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he regularly sent thousands of fighters from Chechen areas to support Russian units.
“Moscow needs to explain what the Defense Ministry plans to do,” Kadyrov said. Meanwhile, the Kremlin says: Silence.
