“Life in danger” – war criminal Ratko Mladic in hospital

Date:

Former Bosnian Serb army chief and convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic is in hospital, according to his family. The man sentenced to life imprisonment had been hospitalized a week ago, his son Darko Mladic told AFP news agency. His father was “in poor health”.

According to the information, the 79-year-old suffers from pneumonia, fluid buildup in the lungs and heart problems. His father’s health has “deteriorated dramatically” since May. “It seems to me that his life is in danger,” the son told local media. According to reports, a Serbian medical team is standing by to examine Mladic. However, it is still unclear whether the doctors will receive approval for this.

In June 2021, a UN court upheld Mladic’s life sentence for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Mladic has been sentenced to life imprisonment in The Hague for his responsibility for the Srebrenica massacre and other war crimes in the Bosnian war.

“Butcher of Bosnia”
Known as the “Butcher of Bosnia”, Mladic is considered one of the main perpetrators of war crimes and genocide during the Bosnian War, which killed approximately 100,000 people and forced 2.2 million to flee. In 1995 Bosnian Serb soldiers murdered more than 8,000 Muslim boys and men in the Bosnian city of Srebrenica.
