An angry resident recently complained to krone.at about the excessive noise from the parrot sanctuary in Vienna-Alsergrund. He speaks of “jackhammer volume” and “continuous disturbance of the peace”. We investigated the dilemma and asked the responsible district manager Saya Ahmad and the animal shelter for parrots and parakeets for more detailed information.
Since April, some 150 parrots and parakeets have been among the new neighbors for the residents of Augasse 2. Because Austria’s only bird sanctuary has found a new rental location here to protect the animals from homelessness and to raise them again after a bad time held. Much to the chagrin of an unknown resident who wrote the editorial.
“Sound of a Jackhammer”
“With the volume of a jackhammer (over 110 decibels)” the birds should also be “clearly audible with the window closed”. Especially in the “summer months with the windows open, the noise is almost unbearable,” says the resident in the letter.
Our on-site inspection revealed that the sound described was not groundbreaking at first. Only after repeated inquiries could the bird sanctuary finally be found. The screeching of parrots can only be heard in the immediate vicinity. We also asked other local residents how they experience the noise in daily life: “You hear it, but you get used to it. It doesn’t bother me at all. I just didn’t know what that was at first.” Or: “I always have the door open at work and it doesn’t bother me at all.”
Only one anonymous complaint so far
The head of the district, Saya Ahmad, also confirms that only one anonymous complaint has been received to date, prompting her to contact the shelter. In this she hopes that complaints and suggestions will be treated “respectfully” in order to guarantee a friendly coexistence in the neighborhood.
That is why the staff of the rescue center also make an effort to get in touch with the residents in their own neighborhood and to show them how the bird sanctuary works. Families with their children are regularly invited to events to get to know the house and their parrots in order to form their own opinion.
Shelter needs donations
“The location in Alsergrund has only been approved for five years. Renovations and extensions for the birds are constantly being built in order to be able to care for and nurture the constantly growing number of birds in a species-specific way,” says the Vienna Bird Sanctuary. A donation is always requested in order to continue financing the sanctuary. Especially in the Corona period, it was even more difficult for animal rights activists to cover the costs for all parrots and parakeets.
