Energy Costs Rise – “Positive for Industry”: Flight Prices Likely to Rise

Date:

According to Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr, flying should become more expensive. “We will not go back to the level we saw before the pandemic,” he said Monday night. The price level – such as tickets for nine, ten or 20 euros – was too low and irresponsible, Spohr emphasized with a scuffle against the competition from the low-cost airlines.

“We will see very stable or maybe even rising ticket prices in the coming years.” With regard to the company, Spohr affirmed that he had fundamental confidence. However, a recession in Germany’s home market is likely unavoidable. This dampens the purchasing power of German passengers.

High inflation in large parts of Europe
The manager explained that rising prices are positive for AUA parent Lufthansa and the entire industry. Because in the Corona crisis, the margins were too small, as were the investments. That is why higher aviation prices are now important. Consumers also know from other sectors that life is currently becoming more expensive globally, the manager said, given the high inflation in Germany and large parts of Europe.

The increased energy costs as a result of the war in Ukraine are a burden. However, this applies to all airlines, so equal opportunities are guaranteed, Spohr said.
