According to US intelligence, Russia has secretly supported political parties and candidates abroad with hundreds of millions of euros. According to an intelligence report published Tuesday, at least $300 million has been transferred from Moscow to more than two dozen countries since 2014 to influence national politics. The amount quoted is likely just “the tip of the iceberg,” said a senior US government official.
It is likely that Russia “secretly transferred more money that has not been discovered,” the source said. The report contains no information on which countries the donations allegedly went to. The Russian ambassador to an undisclosed Asian country is said to have made several millions of dollars available to a presidential candidate, among other things. Bosnia and Ecuador had been mentioned in previous US intelligence reports about Russian interference.
Biden Initiative Brings First Results
The administration of US President Joe Biden requested the report after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24. According to a government official, it is part of Biden’s “democracy summit”, which he launched shortly after his election victory.

The report does not address the situation in the US. US intelligence agencies had previously accused Moscow of interfering in the 2016 US presidential election in favor of eventual winner Donald Trump.
