From next Monday, September 19, 360 monkeypox vaccination appointments will be offered in Vienna. The appointments extend over a period of four weeks – ie 18 injections per day – and take place at the Austria Center. After that, it’s over for now.
There are only 18 appointments because the “vaccinations go hand in hand with very detailed information conversations about the individual risk profile,” said Mario Dujakovic, spokesman for the Vienna City Health Council Peter Hacker (SPÖ).
Two-thirds contact vaccine ‘reserved’
If these 360 people have been vaccinated, it will be over for the time being due to the lack of vaccine, according to Dujakovic. This is also because the decision of the Minister of Health stipulates that the other two thirds are intended for vaccination of symptom-free contact persons of confirmed cases.
These post-exposure vaccinations, ie post-contact vaccinations, are performed at the full dose and should be performed as soon as possible after contact with the disease – ideally within four days up to a maximum of 14 days. Also in this case, two vaccinations are scheduled at 28-day intervals. “One vaccination is sufficient for people who were vaccinated decades ago with the smallpox vaccines used at the time, as a certain immunity can be assumed,” explains Dujakovic.
procedure and registration
- The first vaccinations will be in the next four weeks, followed by the second vaccinations in the next four weeks – this is also the recommended minimum interval between the two injections.
- From Wednesday at 9.00 am, those who have previously registered via “impfservice.wien” have indicated in their personal data that they belong to one of the risk groups listed in the decision of the Minister of Health and have given their consent there. by text message or email to be contacted by email and/or text message.
- The vaccines are injected intradermally, ie under the skin. One vaccine bottle should be enough for up to five vaccinations.
Further vaccination dates for monkeypox preventive vaccinations will be released once new deliveries of the vaccine arrive in Austria. These dates must be allocated according to the scheme described above.
1502 reservations
To date, 1,502 people have signed up for a monkeypox vaccination. 151 people have already received a vaccination after confirmed contact. There were a total of 208 confirmed cases in Vienna, of which 157 have now recovered and 51 are still active.
Anyone who has had close physical contact with a person infected with monkeypox or suspected of having monkeypox because of similar symptoms (especially skin lesions and pustules) is urged to call 1450 and discuss next steps in a medical consultation there.
