At least five people were killed in the collapse of a four-storey apartment building in the Jordanian capital Amman on Tuesday afternoon. According to authorities, the building in the historic Jabal Al Weibdeh district was in disrepair. More than a dozen people were rescued from under the rubble.
Witnesses told Reuters that civil defense workers were clearing debris from the collapsed building to locate any survivors. People would still be under the rubble carrying out rescue work, it was said late Tuesday evening.
Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher al Khasawneh, who went to the scene of the accident, called for an immediate investigation into the collapse of the house in the center of the city. Police cordoned off the area surrounding the collapse site.
