Animal protection is close to our hearts, but it must also be anchored in our thoughts. This is best done at primary school age. Because at school the little ones have to learn what is important when it comes to keeping animals. Only when people are careful and well informed can the animals in their care feel truly comfortable.
A new lesson booklet has been designed to help children gain a better understanding of pet ownership. It shows how important it is to know the needs of animals, understand their body language and care for them responsibly.
The magazine “Tierprofi – Heimtiere” of the association “Tierschutz Macht Schule” highlights important topics related to animal protection and provides young readers with practical tips and motivating solutions. A central topic is the illegal puppy trade, which the children learn about, as well as the important factors to consider before purchasing a dog. You will also learn what breeding torture means and how to recognize and avoid it in dogs, cats and fish.
Animals on the Internet
The story ‘No Likes for Animal Suffering’ explains what lies behind the seemingly funny animal videos often shared on social media. The booklet explains to children why this is often associated with animal cruelty and how they can instead create animal-friendly videos of their own pets that promote animal welfare.
The language of animals
The booklet also provides extensive information about various pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, rats, parakeets, dwarf hamsters and aquarium fish. The cartoon cat Klaro guides the children through the pages and explains what the animals’ body language means and what special needs they have. The children learn that social animals such as rabbits, gerbils and guinea pigs should always be kept with other animals. Even the “guinea pig language” is taught how to communicate with these animals.
The teaching materials, developed by experts in zoology, veterinary medicine and education, help children better recognize dog body signals and feel more confident interacting with dogs.
Show animal professionals!
In a playful way they become real ‘animal professionals’. For each topic in the booklet, children can solve exciting puzzles and at the end they will receive an “animal profession ID card”, which is also available as a template online. There are also action cards that can be used to display terms from the booklet in pantomime.
The lesson booklet is specially designed for groups 3 to 8 and is offered free of charge to class sizes at the club. Lea Mirwald, director of “Tierschutz Macht Schule”, recommends that every child receives a copy of the magazine, because many students remain intensively involved with the content after school. The updated edition reveals even more valuable information and secrets from the world of pets.
