After the fatal accident in the center of Vienna on Sunday, the second driver, who allegedly had a race with the 26-year-old suspect, now denies that it was an illegal race on the Ring. It was only on Tuesday that the 26-year-old suspect, according to his own statement, denied a race between the two.
However, according to the police, the red traffic light was visible to the second driver, who was a witness. The other driver (26) of the Mercedes drove over the intersection and collided with the car of a 48-year-old, who was fatally injured. Police are currently investigating the 26-year-old for culpable homicide on the road.
He was taken to a prison. The Public Prosecution Service in Vienna has already submitted a request for pre-trial detention. A decision is to be made on Wednesday afternoon.
Woman was trapped in her own car
The accident happened around 7.45 pm on the Schottenring near the Vienna stock exchange. The two men were out on the Ring in their powerful cars, the Mercedes and a BMW. Police say the 26-year-old raced his vehicle through an intersection when the red light was on and collided with the 48-year-old woman’s car trying to cross the ring road. She was trapped in her badly damaged car and had to be rescued by the professional fire brigade.
After receiving emergency medical care from the professional rescue service, she was taken to a hospital trauma room, where she succumbed to her serious injuries. The second driver stopped at the red light.

A video recorded by a car driving behind the vehicles involved documented what happened. The speed at which the two drove was initially unclear and is the subject of investigation.
26-year-old was arrested
The 26-year-old suffered minor injuries in the accident and was arrested on the spot by police. It is a Syrian citizen with a Belgian driver’s license who does not live in Vienna. According to the police, he stated that he had been here as a tourist. A doctor found that the young man was not only apparently speeding, but also overtired.
