The teacher shortage is on everyone’s lips. In Vienna alone, teachers had to work nearly 297,000 extra hours from September to April. But what does that actually cost?
The staff shortage, which was once particularly serious in the nursing sector, is now reflected in all professions. Teachers are especially affected. Just a few days before school started, every compulsory school class had a teacher – we reported. However, many educators are still missing throughout Austria. How expensive that is, is apparent from a response from Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) to the SPÖ.
In the past school year, from September to April, Austrian compulsory schools had to work 1.7 million extra hours because of the teacher shortage. Cost point: 80 million euros.
Vienna in third place for overtime
The state has to pay 13.7 million euros for almost 297,000 overtime hours by Viennese teachers. This is the third highest value in Austria, after Lower Austria with 15.1 million euros and Upper Austria (15.5 million euros).
Ministry does not know everything
“It is unacceptable that our schools only function with additional teacher services. This makes this job even more unattractive and will sooner or later have consequences for the education of our children,” emphasizes SPÖ education spokeswoman Petra Tanzler. Since the staff shortage has to be solved at the federal level, Tanzler sees the minister as a duty. Strangely enough, the ministry knows. not how many trainee teachers teach without a diploma.
