Aritz Otxandianoresponsible for sustainability at the Fagor group, pointed out in an interview on Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program that cooperatives are exploring the possibility of investing in energy production projects based on renewable energy sources.

In this direction, they have already met with the Norwegian public energy company statkraft to explore the possibilities of participating in the wind farm project it wants to develop in Debagoiena.

“Yes, we have some first contacts. We have not yet looked into it and no concrete information, but there is a willingness on our part to explore the possibilities of the new model that Statkraft has put on the table together with the municipalities and citizens of Alto Deba. “

Otxandiano believes that a project with these characteristics gives them the opportunity for the agents of the areas in which these parks will be located participate directly in the ownership and management and therefore “are direct beneficiaries of energy that will be generated at a fair price”.

In this sense, he gave an example: “Energy consumption in the group’s production facilities Fagor in Alto Deba exceeds 300 megawatts/year; if it were to be generated by wind power, Statkraft would need to install more than 200 megawatts. It shows the magnitude of the challenge we have,” he emphasized.

However, according to the head of sustainability, other structural measures are also essential, especially a major reform of the electricity market:

Asked how Fagor is affected by the rising energy costspointed out that “in the case of electricity, we are five times more expensive this year, and gas six times more”.

This meant an extra cost of 70 million euros for the entire Fagor group. At the moment, however, they do not plan to suspend production, but given the months of uncertainty ahead, they are not ruling it out either.
