Date:

The discussion about environmental protection and a traffic reversal can be heated. For now, however, the number of cars per capita in the EU is steadily increasing. Most recently, around the turn of the year 2020/2021, there were 560 cars per 1,000 inhabitants in the EU, according to a calculation by the German Federal Statistical Office. With 570 vehicles, Austria is slightly above the EU average.

Ten years ago there were 530 cars per 1000 inhabitants in Austria, in 2000 there were 511.

The Romanians have the fewest cars relative to the population (379). But here too, the stock has doubled since 2007.

Of the 27 members, Austria was in ninth place, behind Germany. The top positions are taken by Luxembourg (682), Italy (670) and Poland (664). Car density was lowest in Romania (379), Latvia (390) and Hungary (403).
