“Very serious crisis” – At least 6 dead after heavy rain in Italy

Date:

According to authorities, at least six people have died in the area around the Italian Adriatic city of Ancona in heavy rain and flooding. In addition, three other people were reported missing in the province of the same name, which lies in the Marche region, the ANSA news agency reported Friday evening, citing civil defense. The situation is a “very serious meteorological crisis,” the brands president said.

Ancona’s provincial government said the flooding was the result of continued rain from Thursday afternoon. Marche president Francesco Acquaroli wrote on Facebook that the “very serious meteorological crisis” in the region is a cause for extreme concern. On Thursday, civil defense called on residents of the coastal town of Senigallia north of Ancona to move to higher areas because of the flooding.

community isolated
Civil defense, firefighters and police worked for hours to clear the mud from the streets, said Luigi D’Angelo, spokesman for the national civil defense agency. Such heavy rains were not predicted. “There are still isolated people we rescue,” explains Stefano Stefoni, director of civil protection for the Marche region.

The municipality of Cantiano is isolated, as are some old people’s homes. Landslides and mud on the roads have been cleared up. “In two to three hours, about 420 millimeters of rain fell, half of what rains in the region in a year. These are moments of extreme concern,” said the president of the Marche region.

Electricity is not stable in the affected area and telephone lines do not always work, authorities said. In Cantiano, in the province of Pesaro Urbino, a municipality of just over 2,000 inhabitants, the streets turned into streams and cars were washed away. The village square was flooded by a meter of water.

Mayor Alessandro Piccini called on citizens to stay at home via social media. “The images from Cantiano are shocking,” Pesaro mayor Matteo Ricci wrote on Facebook. “We stand with strength and solidarity alongside the mayor and all inland communities affected by this violent downpour in hopes that the emergency will be over soon.”
