As predicted, the first snowfall fell at a higher altitude on Saturday night. The snowline dropped to 1,300 meters in some areas, especially in the east of the country. “The last waves of summer travel have barely disappeared when the first snow chain requirements are imposed,” the ÖAMTC said on Saturday morning.
In the border region of Vorarlberg-Tirol, the Silvretta Strae (L188) and the Paznauntal Straße (B188) between Galtür and Partennen have only been passable with snow chains since the morning hours. Winter tires are currently mandatory in the Arlberg area on the road to Lechtal (B198) and on the road to Arlberg (B197).
In addition, the intense rain during the night on Saturday in the Bregenz districts – where hail and sleet whitened the streets in the morning (see video above) – necessitated several fire brigade actions in Dornbirn. In most cases cellars had to be pumped out. No one was injured and no major damage was found.
The first snow also fell in the Tyrolean Zillertal on Saturday. At the Sidanalm some cows were snowed in (see photo above). In some places it snowed up to 1300 meters altitude.
On Saturday, the Adriatic lowlands also provided sugar mountains in Carinthia. Snow fell on the Krametbühel (Atzensberg), on the Mölltaler glacier and at the Wallackhaus in Heiligenblut.
Changeable in the new week
Sunday will calm down a bit, but it should remain quite changeable, as at the start of next week. And if you haven’t already, you should dig warmer things from the depths of your closet. It stays nice and fresh.
