The wait is over: the Aufsteirern 2022 is open! Provincial Governor Christopher Drexler (ÖVP) and Deputy Mayor Judith Schwentner (Greens) of Graz tapped the beer on Sunday morning. A colorful program awaits you throughout the day.
Wearing leather aprons, traditional costumes and hammers, Drexler and Schwentner tapped the beer keg in the main square – this is officially opened on Sunday during the Aufsteirern festival in Graz. Ski legends Hans Knauß and Liz Görgl were also there. It took several hits and a little patience – but in the end the Gösser flowed and the crowd cheered. “Hops and malt, may the Lord preserve it!”
“The whole city will be flooded with folk culture. Have a wonderful day,” Drexler greeted the crowd in the main square. Steirerkrone editor-in-chief Oliver Pokorny welcomed the good news: “We have all been struck by the negative headlines. What could be better than describing the Styrian attitude to life in all its facets?”
Comeback to Corona
It is the 21st edition of the folk culture festival – and after two years of pandemic, it is the first edition without restrictions. Thousands of revelers had already flocked to the center of Graz on Saturday to enjoy time in courtyards and squares. There was singing, dancing, eating and of course drinking. You can find a review here.
An even more colorful spectacle awaits on Sunday. There is a program in 19 places – from the G’stanzl workshop (3:30 pm in the courtyard of the Wiener Werkstätten) to the world record attempt in traditional costume waltz dancing on the Passamtswiese at 11:30 am.
There is just as much culinary offer: individual regions present themselves in the squares and courtyards. In the city farm, delicacies from the peasant women, delicacies from the Schladming-Dachstein region on the Freiheitsplatz and the thermal and volcanic land on the Karmeliterplatz await. In the Landhaushof you can drink a pint in the morning.
We will keep you informed throughout the day with photos, videos and impressions.
