Highest Alert Level – Japan Prepares for Super Typhoon “Nanmadol”

Date:

Japan is preparing for a severe typhoon, the first foothills have already hit the south of the country with strong gusts of wind and heavy rain. The Japanese weather authority JMA warned of the danger of unprecedented strong winds, high waves and landslides as a result of the heavy rainfall. Residents of affected regions were called upon to get to safety in time.

“Nanmadol” was classified as a “super typhoon” by the US Navy Alert Center. The JMA expects wind gusts of up to 250 kilometers per hour in Kyushu on Sunday.

Thousands of residents had to get to safety before the storms, and train and air traffic was already affected on Sunday. Isolated injuries were reported on the southwestern main island. However, there were no reports of major damage or deaths.

The weather authority had previously issued the highest typhoon warning for Kagoshima Prefecture, which is located in Kyushu and was particularly hard hit. Thousands went to emergency shelters there on Sunday, including in neighboring Miyazaki prefecture.

The slow-moving cyclone is likely to move northeast and also cause heavy rain on the main island of Honshu with the capital Tokyo. Authorities and companies have taken security measures.

Tokyo metro line flooded
The authorities predict up to 500 millimeters of rain for Kyushu and 300 millimeters for the capital Tokyo on Honshu. The first heavy rains have already fallen in Tokyo. A metro line had to be closed due to flooding.
