The Cenidh has denounced that the last time she was seen in public, a remarkable physical deterioration and traces of torture could be observed. Tellez was sentenced last year to eight years in prison for “treason against the country.”
The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) warned this Saturday about the serious health condition of the former dissident Sandinista guerrillas Dora Maria Tellez (Nicaragua, 1955). “His life is in danger. We ask for his immediate freedom and that of all political prisoners,” Cenidh demanded in a public statement.
The Cenidh has denounced that the last time Téllez was seen in public – 17 days ago – one could see significant physical deterioration and traces of torture on his body, pale, weak and thin.
Téllez, a historic Sandinista fighter and former comrade in President Daniel Ortega’s struggle, is since June last year in the “El Chipote” prison, known as the Legal Aid Directorate. She was sentenced to eight years in prison for ‘treason against the fatherland’. The Cenidh has asked the authorities for his “immediate release” or the change of the prison regime.
Sandinista trajectory
On August 22, 1978, at the age of 23, he took part in the Sandinista commando who stormed the National Palace and held hostage lawmakers linked to the dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle.
She led the Western Front of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) during the last uprising in 1979, and after the triumph of the Sandinista Revolution, she was Minister of Health.
He distanced himself from the FSLN in 1995, when a group of dissidents founded the former Sandinista Renovation Movement (MRS), now called the Democratic Renovation Union (Unamos), of which he later chaired.
