Due to the energy crisis, Belgium partially switches off the highway lighting at night. On Tuesday evening, the lights went out on the first part of the E40 between Liège and Leuven from 10 pm. The Walloon region in the south of Belgium hopes to save 400,000 euros. “Anything that contributes to lower consumption can alleviate the situation of the energy crisis,” said Walloon Energy Minister Philippe Henry.
On other Belgian motorways, the street lights should also go out between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. in the coming days. “Of course there are consequences for motorists,” said Secretary of Energy Henry. “That’s why we focus on the night, when there is significantly less traffic.” For the time being, the energy-saving measure is limited to three months, after which the Walloon region wants to review the situation. “Road safety is an absolute priority,” Henry emphasized.
Motorists in Belgium reacted calmly to the decision. “Of course it is much more pleasant to drive with the lights on,” says 55-year-old Johan Vanhoyland. “But in Germany I also drive thousands of kilometers on unlit motorways, and without any problem.”
