Two police dogs and two other four-legged friends died – as reported – in mid-August after a jog with an assistance dog handler “with a high probability of overheating from acute cardiovascular failure (heat stroke)”. According to the state police of Lower Austria, this is evident from the pathological findings of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna on Wednesday.
The cause is determined by the State Criminal Investigation Service of Lower Austria, which is now also investigating animal abuse at the assistance dog handler. A criminal investigation is then carried out by the competent public prosecutor or the court. All administrative measures resulting from this are the responsibility of the headquarters of the Provincial Police of Lower Austria.
Died after a jog
The service dog handler, who is described as experienced, was jogging in his spare time in his spare time on August 16 in temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius in a forest area – there were his Belgian Shepherd, a Malinois service dog belonging to a colleague and two private dogs four-legged friends. The animals were wearing muzzles, police said. One of the dogs showed signs of exhaustion, so the officer stopped the flight and drove home. All the animals – three Malinois and a German Shepherd – died in the man’s vehicle on the way home.
The officers of the headquarters of the State Police of Lower Austria are now assigned to other departments. According to the authority, they will not be used as police dog handlers until further notice.
