The so-called “morning-after pill” will be free in France from next year for all women, who do not need a prescription to apply for it at a pharmacy, a way to facilitate access to emergency contraception.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Health, François Braun, who in an interview with the newspaper 20 minutes has justified it as a measure “to combat difficulties in obtaining emergency contraception, as it is known to be most effective in the 24 hours following a relationship that carries a risk of pregnancy”.
The provision, which will appear in the Social Security budget before 2023, is an extension of the current device, allowing underage girls to apply for this method of contraception free of charge and without a prescription.
Braun has also indicated that medical checkups for the detection of sexually transmitted diseases will be free and without a prescription for all young people up to the age of 26, the most affected population group.
